Hike

Lake Sakakawea State Park sits on the south shore of Lake Sakakawea. A trail map highlights the series of trails for hiking and biking that overlook the lake while meandering through the beautiful prairie and forest segments. The park is the western terminus of the North Country Trail, the longest continuous hiking trail in the country at roughly 4,600 miles!

To the west of Beulah lies the 70,000-acre Theodore Roosevelt National Park.  Approximately 20 hiking trails can be found in the park, ranging from easy strolls to more strenuous hikes approaching 20 miles throughout the wondrous local geography.

Hazen is home to the Knife River Indian Villages, a National Historic Site. Visitors can walk several trails through the villages and along the Knife River.

Bike

The Washburn Discovery Trail is a 2.2-mile multi-use concrete trail along the Missouri River in nearby Washburn. The path begins at the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center and follows the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail.

Many local bicyclists enjoy the 8-foot-wide shoulders along Highway 200 to Hazen, giving them a leisurely and safe 20-mile round trip.

The Maah Daah Hey Trail, the best mountain bike trail in North Dakota, is a short drive from Beulah. The 144-mile hiking, biking and horseback-riding route received the Bicycling Travel Award 2022 Best Hidden Gem in the United States.
