The Garrison Dam is an earth-filled embankment dam on the Missouri River constructed between 1947 and 1955. It has given rise to Lake Sakakawea, the third-largest reservoir in the United States. Garrison Dam Powerplant consists of five turbines capable of generating nearly 600,000 kilowatts. Walk-in tours of the dam and powerhouse are available seasonally from June 4 - August 1, or by appointment by calling (701) 654-7411.

The Freedom Mine is the largest lignite mine in the United States. Individuals and groups can view the massive facility to experience the large machinery and various employee roles necessary to produce around 14 million short tons of lignite annually. Several power and energy plants operate in the region surrounding Beulah. The Great Plains Synfuels Plant captures more carbon dioxide from coal conversion than any facility worldwide. Bakken Energy and Mitsubishi Power plan to redevelop Beulah’s Great Plains Synfuels Plant into the largest clean hydrogen production facility in the U.S. The Antelope Valley Station is close to the Freedom Mine and has two units generating 450 megawatts each. Coyote Station is a coal-fired generating unit capable of producing 425 megawatts operated by Otter Tail Power Company.
