September Kicks off Hunting Season in Beulah

Fall is just around the corner, and sportsmen from all walks of life are preparing for hunting season. In 2026, September 4 marks the start of the deer, elk, moose, mountain lion, and pronghorn hunting seasons, with additional game opening later in the month. The North Dakota Game and Fish Department has a rolling calendar with what’s coming up, with several opportunities to hunt fowl in the coming months.

North Dakota is a paradise for hunters and fishermen. Mercer County Provides Endless Hunting Opportunities

Beulah is located in the heart of Mercer County, which is home to several Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) for sportsmen. Visitors and residents alike enjoy thousands of acres of open fields and untouched prairies, which are perfect for hunting prey. Here are a few swaths of land to explore and build your hunting trip around:

• Hille: 3,083 acres
• North Beulah Mine: 1,861 acres
• Harmony Lake: 635 acres
• Missouri Breaks: 477 acres
• Norman and Lucille Schaefer: 313 acres
• Beaver Creek: 285 acres
• Golden Valley: 160 acres

You can decide how immersive your hunting trip should be. Hille and the North Beulah Mine allow visitors to step away from the city and feel like they are the only hunters around for miles. Golden Valley and Beaver Creek are smaller, allowing for easier access and quick hunting getaways.

Many of these WMAs have lakes and rivers for fishing. You can take advantage of the running water in the fall to catch walleye, northern pike, and trout, or wait for the lakes to freeze to enjoy some of the best ice fishing in the United States. 

Hunting is Open to Residents and Non-Residents

Both residents and non-residents of North Dakota can enjoy hunting and fishing in this beautiful state. Resident license costs start at $27 for fishing and $20 for small game. There are also discounts for married couples, veterans, active military, senior citizens, people with disabilities, and youth. Non-resident licenses are more expensive, but still affordable for the casual hunter. Fishing licenses start at $68 for non-residents and $150 for small game.
