Tourism plays a pivotal part in a city’s economic growth. From the coal mining boom to the creation of Lake Sakakawea, tourism helped stabilize and expand Beulah since the 1950s. Lake Sakakawea alone brings in annual tourists for the North Dakota Governor’s Walleye Cup (July), Dakota Walleye Classic (July), and ice fishing during the winter months.
Yes, there is tourism, and then there is cultural tourism. As defined by the United Nations World Tourism Organization, “Cultural tourism is an activity in which the visitor’s essential motivation is to learn, discover, experience, and consume the tangible and intangible cultural attractions and products in a tourism destination. These attractions/products … encompasses … the living cultures with their lifestyles, value systems, beliefs and traditions.”
A large part of Beulah’s culture is hunting. Along with being a fisherman’s retreat, Beulah offers an abundance of prey for hunters.
Beulah’s Big Buck Contest 2025
Hunting has been part of Beulah’s lifestyle for centuries, making Beulah a hunter’s haven for big game, furbearers, upland, and small game. From August through December, including January of the following year, anyone can hunt specific animals with permits granted by the North Dakota Game and Fish Department.
To celebrate the end of the 2024/2025 hunting season, Beulah CVB is bringing back the popular Big Buck Contest for its 21st year. Since 2004, residents and visitors have participated in showing off their big buck trophies acquired during the hunting season.
Offering cash prizes to up to six adult winners per category and hunting essentials to youth contestants, the Big Buck Contest is one of the most sought-after events to start the year. You’re invited to join us!
To extend your Beulah visit, plan your trip for February 1st to include the 6th annual Night at the Races. Embrace more of Beulah’s culture in style. Click here to view your lodging options.
