Since 1987, the United States has designated March as Women’s History Month to honor the often-overlooked contributions of women who shaped our nation. In Beulah, such history is woven into the very fabric of our streets, businesses, and community spirit.

As we celebrate the 115th anniversary of International Women’s Day on March 8, 2026, the Beulah Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) invites you to look back at the trailblazers who came before us and support the women-led business owners driving our economy today.

Give to Gain

To emphasize the importance of support, resources, and mentorship, “Give to Gain” is the International Women’s Day 2026 theme. When these assets are given, the community gains. This type of reciprocity is the Beulah-norm, from the neighborly support of our local businesses to the volunteer spirit that keeps donation-based entities and schools thriving.

Beulah Is Women’s History

Beulah’s name and identity are tied to the legacy of women, including the Women’s Suffrage movement. The city was named after Beulah Stinchcombe, the niece of L. C. Pettibone of the Tuttle Land Company. While many town names originated from industrial titans or railroad magnates, Beulah’s name reminds all of family ties and personal legacies.

Statewide, North Dakota has some legends we must acknowledge and honor:

  • Laura Eisenhuth: The first woman elected to a statewide office in the United States.
  • Minnie D. Craig: The first House of Representatives Madam Speaker in the United States.
  • Dr. Fannie Dunn Quain: North Dakota’s first female doctor and a tireless advocate for public health, who later established the state’s first baby clinic.
  • Florence “Tree Tops” Klingensmith: North Dakota’s first licensed female pilot.
  • Brynhild Haughland: Instrumental in developing legislation that created a medical program that other states modeled.

Beulah’s Business Women

Women business owners are the heartbeat of Beulah’s local economy, evidenced by the high volume of women-owned businesses on Main Street. The trailblazing energy continues with the 2025 growth of women-owned boutiques, service providers, and specialty shops.

Most recently, owners of Bloom’n House returned to Beulah to launch their business, proving that Beulah is a premier destination for shopping, service, stability, and prosperity.

Ways to Celebrate Women’s History Month

Remember, the theme this year is Give to Gain! This March, join Beulah CVB in being purposeful in our gratitude and active in patronizing women-owned businesses. Support comes in many forms, and we’ve compiled a list:

  • Give Your Support Locally: Make a conscious effort to shop at a women-owned business this month. Whether it’s a morning coffee, a new outfit, or a gift for a friend, your dollars help these businesses continue to "give back" to our community.
  • Visit the Mercer County Museum: Dive deeper into the stories of the German-Russian pioneer women who survived the harsh North Dakota winters to build the foundations of our county.
  • Share a Story: Use social media to highlight a woman in Beulah who has impacted your life—a teacher, a business owner, a healthcare worker, or a neighbor. Tag us and use #GiveToGain and #VisitBeulah.
  • Mentor the Next Generation: If you are an established professional, give your time to a young woman in our community. When we share our knowledge, Beulah gains a brighter future.

Women’s History Month ends on March 31st, yet the impact of women is felt year-round.

Happy Women’s History Month from the Beulah CVB!
