Ending National Shooting Sports Month, moving into crisp autumn Mercer County air, a new sense of excitement takes over. The 2025-2026 hunting season is here, offering hunters acres of vast fields and prairies where they can prey upon squirrels to big deer, and so much in between. Though the hunting season kicks off in the fall, it carries right into winter, creating the perfect setting for both seasoned hunters and passionate skiers to enjoy the lush landscapes of beautiful Beulah.
Mercer County, A Hunter’s Haven
Mercer County is more than just a place to hunt; it’s a sprawling paradise where a hunter’s ambition meets endless opportunity. With thousands of acres of open fields and untouched prairies, you’ll find prime hunting ground in our numerous Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs). Just look at the abundance of land waiting to be explored:
- Hille: 3,083 acres
- North Beulah Mine: 1,861 acres
- Harmony Lake: 635 acres
- Missouri Breaks: 477 acres
- Norman and Lucille Schaefer: 313 acres
- Beaver Creek: 285 acres
- Golden Valley: 160 acres
As fall turns to winter, the skies over Beulah come alive. The southern migration period from September through November brings a fantastic opportunity for waterfowl hunting. When the water freezes, Lake Sakakawea transforms into a world-class ice fishing destination, where a day of spear or ice fishing can yield a "mixed bag" of walleye, northern pike, trout, salmon, catfish, and smallmouth bass.
Whether you're after something on land or in the water, Beulah’s diverse habitat means there’s a target for every kind of hunter:
- Big Game: Moose, Mule, and White-tailed Deer
- Upland & Small Game: Tree Squirrels, Pheasant, Sharp-tailed Grouse, and Wild Turkey
- Furbearers: River Otter, Bobcat, and Coyote
A Skier’s Sanctuary
If hunting isn't your thing, don't worry—Beulah still offers outdoor adventure, no matter the season. Residents will tell you, "Just because it's cold, doesn’t mean we stay inside." As the temperatures drop and snow blankets the landscape, Beulah transforms into a winter hub of recreation.
We've already touched on the thrill of ice fishing on Lake Sakakawea, but that's just the beginning. Given that the Midwest is known for its incredible snowfall, cross-country skiing is a top choice for winter fun. Skis can be rented at the Energy Wellness Center.
For those who enjoy basking outside in the beauty of winter white scenery, take a little escape to Riverside Park - a cozy spot for a walk, some fresh air, or quiet time together.
